Details of SC 8/224/11176
Reference: SC 8/224/11176
Description:
Petitioners: Margaret Marshal, Countess of Norfolk, John de Hastings, Earl of Pembroke, and William de Beauchamp, knight.
Name(s): Marshal, Countess of Norfolk; de Hastings, Earl of Pembroke; de Beauchamp, Margaret; John; William
Addressees: King.
Nature of request: The petitioners state that, by a statute of 16 June 1384, Gaunt and Burley were granted the wardship of the lands formerly held in dower or for her life by Countess Anne, at which time her heir, the Earl of Pembroke, was married to Gaunt's daughter, Elizabeth. This marriage has since been terminated, and the petitioners therefore request that these lands now be granted to them, in salvation of the Earl's inheritance, until his full age, offering to pay the king £100 more than Gaunt and Burley currently pay.
Nature of endorsement: Let this petition be sent to chancery, call those who should be called and do right no this matter.
People mentioned: John [of Gaunt], King of Castile and Leon, Duke of Lancaster; Richard Burlee (Burley), knight; Anne [de Hastings], countess of Pembroke; John de Hastings, Earl of Pembroke; Elizabeth [de Hastings], daughter of John of Gaunt; [Edward III, King of England].
Note: Dated by Rees to the period 1384-5; however, the petition states that Elizabeth was now married elsewhere, and she married John Holand, Duke of Exeter, on 24 June 1386. The petition therefore presumably dates to some point between June 1384 and 1389, when the young Earl died.
Date: [1386-1389]
