Details of SC 8/183/9104
Reference: SC 8/183/9104
Description:
Petitioners: Walter Amyas; John Abraham; John Donne; John Prat; Ralph de Walsham.
Name(s): Amyas; Abraham; Donne; Prat; de Walsham, Walter; John; John; John; Ralph
Addressees: King.
Nature of request: The petitioners state that the earl and countess of Pembroke held the lordship and castle of Abergavenny of them for the terms of their life, with reversion to themselves. After the earl's death this was granted to the countess as before, but after her death, the escheator of Herefordshire inquired into her lands, and certified that he did not know of whom this was held, or to whom the reversion belongs. They therefore request that another writ be issued to correct these details.
Nature of endorsement: [None.]
Places mentioned: Bergavenny (Abergavenny), [Monmouthshire, Wales]; Wales; Herefordshire.
People mentioned: Anne [de Hastings], Countess of Pembroke; John de Hastings, Earl of Pembroke; Edward [III], King of England.
Note: The chancery warrant with which this document was enclosed was dated at Westminster on 9 May; no year is specified, but it was addressed to the chancellor, Michael de la Pole (March 1383-October 1386). Anne, Countess of Pembroke died on 3 April 1384, and given that the petition states that the inquest ordered on her death had already taken place, it is highly unlikely that this would have been completed quickly enough for the resultant warrant to date to 9 May 1384, only a month later. Other letters were issued from Westminster on 9 May 1385, while the king was at Clarendon on 9 May 1384 and Windsor in 1386 (the only other dates possible given the address to de la Pole).
Date: [1385]
