Description:

Forwards copy of a petition addressed to the Recruiting Committee by Private J C Hope and eleven others of the British West Indies Regiment protesting about withholding of pay increase and refusal to grant commissions to 'coloured West Indians'. Other signatories are named as V G Thomas, E E Packer, V L Talma, L A Greaves, J B Johnson, L C Deane, A L Marshall, L L Skinner, R Thompson, H P J Ince and G F Bowen. With copy of a letter from J Challenor Lynch, chairman of the Recruiting Committee, pointing out that these men went in the earlier contingents from Barbados and were told that they would be treated in the same way as other British Regiments. Item also contains copy of a letter from 'sergeants of the British West Indies Regiment' making the same points. This letter is signed by M Murphy, 3rd Battalion; names of the other 179 signatories are not given. No. 173, folios 109-121
