Details of SC 8/142/7080
Reference: SC 8/142/7080
Description:
Petitioners: Robert le Corouner (Coroner) of Scarborough.
Name(s): Corouner (Coroner), Robert
Addressees: King and council.
Nature of request: Robert le Corouner of Scarborough states that he sued a writ of imprisonment against John de Rolleston, chaplain and Keeper of Scarborough, for himself and for others of the town whom John had imprisoned without process of law until they had paid him a redemption, and from whom he had also taken goods and merchandise without payment or warrant; but that John, to prevent this suit, had him attached in the Marshalsea and held there, against mainprise, for a year and a half, until the King ordered his release. He requests a remedy, on his own behalf and that of the others.
Nature of endorsement: He is to have the writ of conspiracy provided for his case.
Places mentioned: Scarborough, [North Riding of Yorkshire]; Marshalsea prison, [Southwark, Surrey].
People mentioned: John de Rolleston, chaplain, Keeper of Scarborough; Roger Brabazon.
Note: CFR 1307-19 p.143 is dated 8 August 1312, and p.389 is dated 15 January 1319. The petition must date from between these two dates, and indeed probably from the earlier part of this period, as CFR 1307-19 p.389 states that Scarborough was previously in the keeping of John de Moubray. The petitioner receives a pardon, as an adherent of Thomas Earl of Lancaster, for the death of Piers Gaveston, on 16 October 1313 (CPR 1313-17 p.25).
