Details of SC 8/123/6149
Reference: SC 8/123/6149
Description:
Petitioners: Henry de Lancaster.
Name(s): de Lancaster, Henry
Addressees: King and Council.
Nature of request: Henry de Lancaster requests the delivery of certain knight's fees in Devon and Cornwall inherited from Chaworth, his wife's father. He states that, as Chaworth was a tenant-in-chief, an inquest was held before Wallewain into these fees, then in the hands of the king's father due to the minority of Maud, and the inquests were sent to the Exchequer to examine the records in case any were held of the king in chief. These were then summoned back to the Chancery with the required evidence, but were never delivered. Lancaster also requests deliverance of 12 acres of pasture appertaining to his manor of Rodley in Gloucestershire, as appears by an inquest held before Claidon.
Nature of endorsement: Let the inquest and certification be brought to Chancery, and the Chancellor shall hear Henry's reasons and summon whoever he wishes of the council, and do as he sees fit according to reason.
Places mentioned: Devon; Cornwall; Rodley, Gloucestershire
People mentioned: John Wallewain (Walewayn), escheator; Patrick de Chaworth; Maud (Matilda) [de Lancaster], daughter and heiress of Patrick de Chaworth, wife of Henry de Lancaster; William de Claidon.
Note: Dated on the guard to c.1319, with reference to SC 8/123/6143 (which also relates to this land in Rodley) and SC 8/56/2769 (seemingly also presented with that petition), both dated to c.1319 with reference to Cole, Docs. Illustrative of English History, p.54, which records a note on the parliament roll for 1319 referring to two petitions of Henry de Lancaster.
Date: [c. 1319]
