Details of SC 8/104/5168
Reference: SC 8/104/5168
Description:
Petitioners: Joan de Felton, widow of Thomas de Felton.
Name(s): de Felton, Joan
Addressees: King of Castile and Leon, Duke of Lancaster.
Nature of request: The petitioner asks the addressee to pray to the king that she has livery of her lands etc., and that he should consider the great oppressions and hardships that Thomas de Felton endured in the king's service, including imprisonment. And that Thomas's executors have part of certain sums owed to him, for quittance of some of his debts for the discharge of his soul, and that his heirs and executors etc., have quittance and discharge before the king and his officers in the exchequer. She states that the addressee's father and the present king were obliged to Felton in £10,359 15s 6d, as appears in his accounts. Beyond this is owed to Thomas the sum of £4,503 5s 4d, as appears by three supplications his executors have shown to king and council, which the said executors are unable to obtain before the king's officers, who, notwithstanding the great sums due to the said Thomas have seized the manor of Kirton, which Thomas and the petitioner held equally from the gift of Edward, Prince of Wales, for the term of both their lives, later confirmed by King Edward III, and afterwards ratified and confirmed by the king, as appears fully by his letters patent shown to king and council. They have also seized all the other lands and tenements of the said Thomas, in which the petitioner has a joint estate as she has shown by charters and indentures.
Nature of endorsement: [None]
Places mentioned: Kirton, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned: [John of Gaunt], King of Castile and Leon, Duke of Lancaster; Thomas de Felton; Edward, Prince of Wales; Edward III, King of England.
Note: Internal evidence indicates that this petition must date from the reign of Richard II and it seems likely that it is to be associated with the confirmation recorded in CPR 1377-81, p. 600.
Date: [c. 1381]
