Details of SC 8/96/4757
Reference: SC 8/96/4757
Description:
Petitioners: Thomas Erle of Bristol, John Parker of Worcester, Philip Pole, Pain Gascoigne, Richard Manus, Richard Hunte of Tewksbury, Robert Roket and others.
Name(s): Erle; Parker; Pole; Gascoigne; Manus; Hunte; Roket, Thomas; John; Philip; Pain; Richard; Richard; Robert
Addressees: Commons of parliament.
Nature of request: The petitioners state that a ship chartered by them at Michaelmas in the King's ninth year to go to Bordeaux was stolen, with the merchandise it contained, by the people of St Malo. They complained to the King, who sent letters of the privy seal to the Duke of Brittany, who ordered the people of St Malo to make restitution: but they have refused to do so, although the petitioners have sued for this for a year and a helf. They request that mark or reprisal might be granted to them for the value of the ship and merchandise, against the people of St Malo.
Nature of endorsement: [On face] Let it be delivered to the lords.[None on dorse]
Places mentioned: Bristol; Worcester, [Worcestershire]; Tewkesbury, [Gloucestershire]; Chepstow, [Monmouthshire, Wales]; Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]; St Malo, Britanny, [France].
People mentioned: [John VI de Montfort], Duke of Brittany.
Note: Datable to c. 1432 with reference to Michaelmas in the King's ninth year [1430] and to the petitioners' suit of a year and a half. It is possible that the ninth year referred to is 9 Edward IV, but CPR 1429-1436 p.10 and p.15 (mentions of Thomas Erle dated 11 November 1429 and 25 January 1430) would seem to suggest the earlier date.
