Details of SC 8/95/4730
Reference: SC 8/95/4730
Description:
Petitioners: Luke de Barry, formerly servant (valet) of Edward I's household.
Name(s): de Barry, Luke
Addressees: King.
Occupation: servant (valet) of Edward I's household
Nature of request: Luke de Barry states that he has served both the King and his father for a long time in Scotland, and put to ransom twice by the Scots in Edward I's reign, and once in Edward II's, after the battle of Stirling [Bannockburn]; and that because of these ransoms and hardships has sold and leased his lands and tenements. He requests some recompense for his service.
Nature of endorsement: Coram domino rege.He is to sue before the Steward, Keeper of the Wardrobe and King's confessor, and they are to inform themselves about his service and inform the King.
Places mentioned: Lochmaben, [Dumfriesshire, Scotland]; Dumfries, [Dumfriesshire, Scotland]; Linlithgow, [West Lothian, Scotland]; Douglas, [Lanarkshire, Scotland]; Stirling, [Stirlingshire, Scotland].
People mentioned: Edward [I], King of England; John de Seint Johan (St John); John de Castre; Robert de Clifford; Robert [I] de Brus (Bruce), [King of Scotland]; James de Douveglas (Douglas).
Note: This petition must date from between the battle of Bannockburn in 1314 and Edward II's death in 1327. It probably dates from c. 1324, like many of the other petitions in this file (although at least one, SC 8/95/4733, can definitely be dated to 1322). Bain dates it to 1314-1319, although the French endorsement would suggest a later date than that.
Date: [1314-1327]
