Description:

Rebellion of 'Negro population', high number of casualties and destruction of property reported. Started at court house in Morant Bay, St. Thomas in the East, and spread to surrounding areas. Troops and Maroons despatched. Martial law declared. Eyre blames agitators such as Baptist ministers and followers of Dr. E.B. Underhill, secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society in England, as well as Mr. G.W. Gordon, Member of Assembly and Baptist preacher.
