Details of SC 8/62/3076
Reference: SC 8/62/3076
Description:
Petitioners: Margaret de Mortemer (Mortimer), widow of Edmund de Mortimer.
Name(s): de Mortemer (Mortimer), Margaret
Addressees: King and council.
Nature of request: 1) Mortemer requests that right be done to her and that she have restitution of the castle and manor of Bridgwater together with the issues from the time that they came into the king's hand. Mortemer was jointly enfeoffed with her husband of the castle and manor of Bridgwater and held it following her husband's death until Roger de Mortimer surrendered it to the will of the king and she was ousted. An inquisition has found that she was seised of the castle and manor at the time that it was taken into the king's hand.2) Mortimer requests right be done to her and restitution be made of her dower land of Gwerthrynion which was taken into the king's hand for the same reason.
Nature of endorsement: Let the inquisitions concerning the petition be brought before the council.
Places mentioned: Bridgwater, Somerset; Warthreygnon (Gwrtheyrnion) commote, [Radnorshire, Wales].
People mentioned: Edmund de Mortemer (Mortimer), late husband of the petitioner; Roger de Mortemer (Mortimer), son of Edmund de Mortimer.
Note: Must date from soon after one of the forfeitures of Margaret's son, Roger Mortimer, and almost certainly to his first forfeiture, in 1322. Margaret was committed to a nunnery in 1325, and thus the petition probably dates from between those two dates. 'Complete Peerage', ix, p.283. The dating in Rees, 'Petitions Relating to Wales', dating it to c.1304, is incorrect.
Date: [1322-1325]
