Details of SC 8/41/2039
Reference: SC 8/41/2039
Description:
Petitioners: Margaret de Badelesmere (Badlesmere), widow of Bartholomew de Badlesmere.
Name(s): de Badelesmere (Badlesmere), Margaret
Addressees: King and council.
Nature of request: Badelesmere shows that she sued by writ concerning the quarrel of the Earl of Lancaster for the lands taken into the hand of the king's father. The sheriff of Essex delivered all but the manor of Thaxted, which was held against him by Audley and others. Following a lengthy process by which she petitioned the parliament of Northampton the sheriff took the manor into the king's hand, but no man came to receive the manor for Badelesmere. In the meantime Audley rode against the king at Bedford as a result of which the king seized all of his lands and the manor was delivered to Badelesmere. Audley petitioned in parliament for the return of the manor since he had been seised of it when he forfeited so that Badelesmere requests a writ of execution on the process before Audley's participation at Bedford.
Nature of endorsement: Let the process made at the suit of Audley in Chancery by which the manor was restored them be viewed.
Places mentioned: Thaxted, [Essex]; Northampton, [Northamptonshire]; Bedford, [Bedfordshire].
People mentioned: Thomas [of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster; Bartholomew de Badelesmere (Badlesmere), late husband of the petitioner; Hugh Daudele (Audley).
Note: The petition dates to c. 1328 as it makes mention of events in the quinzene of Michaelmas 2 Edward III, and also to an earlier petition presented at the Northampton parliament held in April 1328.
Date: [c. 1328]
