Description:
Petitioners: William de Detlyng (Detling).
Name(s): de Detlyng (Detling), William
Addressees: King.
Nature of request: Detling states that he was about to depart to the wars in Wales, and he borrowed from Cresse, a Jew of London, £10 until a certain day. Afterwards Cresse came and he paid £9 at the day assigned and requested a respite of 20s, but because he was not paid on that day he demanded 50 marks. Detling requests that the king aid him so that he is not ruined.1)
Nature of endorsement: Coram rege.2) It should be enquired by the justices of the Jews. And if it is found so he should pay 20s. and be quit.3) He should have a writ according to the form of the petition.

Note: The petition is problematic in dating for the only dating evidence refers to Detling's service to the king at Kenilworth presumably in 1265, and to his participation in the Welsh War which could refer to that of 1277, 1282-3, and the rebellion of 1294-5. It seems more likely that it was the decisive war of 1282-3 that was referred to, so it seems likely that the petition followed the ending of the war in 1283.
