Reference: SC 8/27/1305
Description:
Petitioners: Isabel, former wife of John Boteler (Butler) of Bewsey, knight
Name(s): Boteler (Butler), Isabel; John
Addressees: Commons in parliament
Nature of request: Isabel says that when she was at Bewsey on the Monday before St James the Apostle last passed, Pulle, in the company of others, broke into her house by force and arms, raped her, and took her almost naked into Wales, for which rape he is indicted before the king's justices at Lancaster. The king issued letters for Pulle's arrest and for Isabel to be taken into ward, but Pulle has withdrawn into remote parts of Wales where the king's writ does not run and has not been taken, although Stanley has found the petitioner and put her in ward at Chester. She asks for writ of proclamation to be issued by the king's chancellery of Lancaster to the sheriff to summon Pulle before the justices of the county palatine at their next session to answer for these felonies, and for him to be attainted for high treason if he does not appear; Pulle has long been outlawed for felony.
Nature of endorsement: The king wishes it.
Places mentioned: Beausey (Bewsey), Lancashire; Wirral, Cheshire; Wales; Lancaster, [Lancashire]; Birkhede (Birkenhead), Cheshire; Chester, [Cheshire]
People mentioned: William Pulle, late of Wirral, gentleman; Thomas Stanley, knight
Note: The commission mentioned in this petition is dated 25 October 1436 in CPR 1436-41, p.83, so the petition must have been presented after this. There is no reason to doubt its attribution in Rot. Parl. IV, p.495 to the parliament which met on 21 January 1437.
