Details of SC 8/23/1135
Reference: SC 8/23/1135
Description:
Petitioners: Thomas Chaucer, esquire, butler to Henry IV; Lewis John; John Snypston (Snibston).
Name(s): Chaucer; John; Snypston (Snibston), Thomas; Lewis; John
Addressees: Commons of parliament.
Occupation: butler to Henry IV
Nature of request: The petitioners state that they are owed certain sums of money for wines for Henry IV, for which they have tallies to be paid by certain customs officers, but they cannot be paid, as the customs do not amount to enough money, and as the customs officers have been discharged from their posts; and furthermore, the commissioners assigned to pay these debts do not wish to do so, as they do not have bills of debenture under the seal of the Treasurer of Henry IV's household. They ask the commons to ask the king to order the commissioners to pay them, when they have seen the tallies and when they have received sufficient letters of acquittance from the parties to discharge the king.
Nature of endorsement: [On face] Soit prie a Roy (A request is to be made to the king).[On dorse] The response to this petition is on the roll of the parliament held at Westminster on the Monday after the octave of Martinmas in the second year of the reign of King Henry, the fifth since the conquest.
People mentioned: [Henry IV], King of England; Henry [Bowet], Archbishop of York; Thomas [Langley], Bishop of Durham; John Pelham; Robert Waterton; John Leventhorp.
Note: As it says on the dorse, this petition is enrolled on the roll of the November parliament of 1414 (2 Henry V) (Rot. Parl. vol. IV pp.37b-38b).
Date: 1414
