Details of SC 8/23/1129
Reference: SC 8/23/1129
Description:
Petitioners: Oliver Billyng (Billing) of Whimpton; Agnes Billyng (Billing), wife of Oliver Billing.
Name(s): Billyng (Billing); Billyng (Billing), Oliver; Agnes
Addressees: King.
Nature of request: Oliver Billyng of Whimpton, and Agnes [Billyng] his wife complain that when John Sewale of Whimpton, Agnes' former husband, died, he left her and his brother, John Sewale of Coventry, an old, sick man, his executors, and that Richard Stanop suborned this John Sewale, and used him to get possession of all his brother's, and Agnes', goods and possessions, and all the debts due to his brother. They cannot have remedy for this within Nottinghamshire, as Richard Stanop is so feared by the common people, and so request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement: To this petition, read to the aforementioned Richard Stanop in the presence of the king and of the lords spiritual and temporal, he said by way of response that he was not guilty of any of the matters contained in this petition.
Places mentioned: Wympeton (Whimpton), [Nottinghamshire]; Coventry, [Warwickshire].
People mentioned: John Sewale of Whimpton, former husband of Agnes Billing; John Sewale of Coventry, brother of John Sewale of Whimpton; Richard Stanop (Stanhope), knight.
Note: Rot. Parl. vol. IV, p.30a (no.8), assigns this petition to 1414, and most of the surrounding petitions that can be dated seem to be from that year.SC 8/23/1140, from the November parliament of 1414, is a complaint from Richard Stanop against complaints made against him by a Margaret Basset in the parliament of April 1414, and mentions other matters: perhaps these complaints are from that parliament also.
Date: [? 1414]
