Reference: SC 8/19/915A
Description:
Petitioners: Master and scholars of Mokel Universite Hall (University College) Oxford.
Addressees: King and council.
Nature of request: The master and scholars of University College Oxford, state that one Edmund Franceys of London, a very wealthy man, has sued against some of the tenants of the college for their lands, and has acquired them by collusion and false pleading. Now, thinking that the college is too poor to maintain a suit against him, he is trying to acquire the rest of their endowment, and has brought a writ of nisi prius against them for this, against which they do not have the power to put up a defence, although they have sufficient evidence, as he has procured those empanelled on the inquest to be of his party. They request that the parties be summoned before the council to show their evidence, so that the college is not disinherited.
Nature of endorsement: [None]
Places mentioned: Oxford, [Oxfordshire]; London.
People mentioned: Edmund Franceys (Francis), citizen of London.
