Bowie, James (c 1789-1869). Born in London, c 1789 and died at Claremount, Cape Town, 2 July 1869. He was a Kew Gardener in about 1810, was sent to Brazil with Allan Cunningham, another Kew Collector, between 1814-1817, and to the Cape, from 1818-1823. He again visited the Cape in 1827, and became Superintendent of Baron Ludwig's garden at the Cape. His collections are preserved in the herbarium of the British Museum (Natural History). The genus Bowiea was dedicated to him by Dr Harvey.
