Description:

Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (prisoner, and signed by prosecutor) on behalf of Thomas Rumbald/Rumball, bookbinder, convicted at the Old Bailey in October 1789, for stealing 50 printed pamphlets and 50lbs of paper, value 39/-, property of William Woodfall, printer. Evidences supplied by Sarah Atkinson, William Woodfall, Christopher Pinchin, servant to Mr Woodfall; Thomas Rogers, overseers of Mr Woodfall's business (spelled 'Woodhall's') and Joseph Thompson, constable. Grounds for clemency: first offence, previous good behaviour, is contrite, has excellent character witnesses, was 'seduced' by another into the crime, is ill (suffering from 'Gaol Distemper'), has received a promise of employment, has a wife and 3 small children (wife is pregnant) and prosecutor claimed to trust the prisoner more than his own family. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to find sureties for remainder of sentence.
