Duke of Savoy to Count Maffei: General Daun would like to winter 'over the mountains' [in Savoy], but sees it as impractical. Importance of maintaining access to Savoy and a diversion to prevent the enemy detaching troops to the low countries. The enemy occupation of Chambéry and Montmélian makes wintering in Savoy impossible. Baron Schulenburg has asked for another 8,000 infantry. Maffei should inform Marlborough and Prince Eugene of all this. Dated at Turin. ff. 105, 106
