George Stepney to Sir William Trumbull [secretary of state]: the states [general] have reminded the elector Palatine that in case of conflict they are bound to support the landgrave of Hesse by a treaty of 1690. The states of the circle of the upper Rhine are proposing a diet. The states have been invited by the directors of the circle, who are the duke of Simmeren (who is the elector Palatine) and the bishop of Worms. The landgrave will not be represented.
