Administrative / biographical background:

Roger Nathaniel Quirk, born 1909, was educated at Winchester College, and Kings College, Cambridge where he obtained a 1st class Natural Science tripos, a B.A. in 1931, and M.A. in 1935. He entered the Civil Service in 1931, and served in various departments including the Ministry of Fuel and Power, Office of the Lord President of the Council, and Office of the Minister for Science. He published several articles on Anglo-Saxon and medieval archaeology, and art history. He was made a Companion of the Bath in 1960 and a Fellow of the Society of Arts.

Quirk was a member of the Historical Manuscripts Commission between 1959 and 1964, Under-Secretary for the Department of Education and Science, and a member of the Institute for Historical Research Committee from 1963. He was a member of the Council of the British Records Association from 1962 until his death in November 1964.
