Instruments and consents to the financial transactions, loans, etc., of local authorities made by the General Board of Health, the Local Government Act Office of the Home Office the Local Government Board and the Ministry of Health under various statutes, including the Public Health Act 1875, the Small Dwellings Acquisition Act 1899, Small Holdings and Allotment Act 1908, Education Acts and Housing Acts 1890-1924, for each of which categories there are separate volumes. These volumes known formerly as Sanction Books have been retained in their entirety until 1871, but thereafter only a few sample volumes have been kept. The borrowing of money by sanitary authorities was sanctioned by the General Board of Health under the Public Health Act, 1848 up to September, 1858 when the Secretary of State took over the duty of issuing sanctions under the Local Government Act, 1858. Those duties were transferred to the Local Government Board in 1871. The board and its successors became the sanctioning authority to the borrowing of money under numerous acts. |
