The instance minute books in this series are of the High Court of Admiralty, and, from November 1875, of the Admiralty courts of the High Court of Justice. The books contain brief notes to all the proceedings in instance cases, entered under its reference number. Particulars of all documents filed, and of all decrees and orders of the court are also given. Until 1918 each volume has its own index of ships' names. The transactions recorded in these instance minute books are detailed more fully than in the corresponding cause books. |

There was a card index for HCA 20 and HCA 27 covering 1914-1924, but all the data from it has now been added to the catalogue. Another index covering the years 1860-1885 (IND 1/9460) gives ships' names and the minute book folio numbers. These numbers correspond with the numbers given to the associated instance cause papers in HCA 19 and HCA 20 |
