Title: | Ministry of Technology and successors: Vehicles and Mechanical Engineering Products Division and successors: Registered Files (ED, EE and EF Series) |
Description: |
These files (otherwise in HF 8) relate primarily to the Government's relationship with and sponsorship of the motor vehicle manufacturing industry, in particular British Leyland Ltd and Chrysler (UK) and including the National Advisory Council for the Motor Manufacturing Industry, for which the Department provided the secretariat. Some of the files deal with assistance to the motor industry under the Local Employment Acts, a function exercised by the Board of Trade until 1969 and with requests for assistance under Section 8 of the Industry Act 1972. There are also files relating to industrial strategies and the Tripartite way of working (Government, management and unions). |
Date: | 1960-1990 |
Arrangement: |
The ED prefix was first used by Mintech in 1968, but included substantial re-registration from the AH series, so some files contain papers that date from 1966. There is also re-registration from the DIR series, formerly administered by the Board of Trade. |

Administrative / biographical background: |
In 1970, the functions of EP Division were transferred to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), but the division retained the same structure and name, although its mnemonic changed from EP to VME. In May 1972, VME and the Machine Tools and Manufacturing Machinery (M) Divisions were amalgamated to form the Mechanical Engineering (M) Division. In 1975, the Department of Industry (DOI) split the Mechanical Engineering Division into two separate divisions: Vehicle Division (V) and Machine Tools and Mechanical Engineering Division (M). Mintech's EP 1 Branch was concerned with the sponsorship of the motor industry, agricultural machinery and construction equipment and with the economic development committees (EDCs) for Motor Vehicle Distribution and Repair and Motor Manufacturing. It also provided the Secretariat for the National Advisory Council for the Motor Manufacturing Industry (NACMMI). Branch 1 of the DTI's Mechanical Engineering Division carried out most of the functions previously the responsibility of the VME Division. The Vehicle Division, which was created by the DOI in 1975, consisted of two branches. Branch 1 dealt with sponsorship and technical matters relating to motor vehicle manufacturing and vehicle components and Branch 2 dealt with the motor cycle industry, internal combustion engines, agricultural machinery, caravans and trailers, pedal cycles, garage equipment and the retail and car hire trades. |
