Under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 English Nature (as the successor to the Nature Conservancy) has a statutory function to declare, maintain and manage prime conservation sites as National Nature Reserves. The Act also empowers English Nature to purchase land to become National Nature Reserves as well as leasing land or entering into a nature reserve agreement with the owner or occupier. |
