Title: Registry of Friendly Societies: Building Societies, Annual Returns
Description:

Annual returns submitted by certain Building Societies on the Register in or after 1950. The files so far transferred contain annual returns for the years prior to 1951 of all such Societies incorporated before 1876, and during the years 1885, 1895, 1905, 1914, 1924, 1934, 1945 and 1956; and of all such Societies (unless included in the above categories) whose assets on or after 31 December 1961 exceeded £30 million.

Arrangement:

The series is arranged alphabetically in the following four groupings:

  • Annual returns for the years prior to 1951: pieces 1-465
  • Annual returns for the years prior to 1961: pieces 466-903
  • Annual returns for the years prior to 1971: pieces 904-1257
  • Annual returns for the years prior to 1981: pieces 1258-1718

However, the occasional inclusion of newly-created societies has disrupted this scheme, particularly in the last grouping of pieces 1258-1718. Researchers are therefore advised to examine the list carefully.
