This series contains the notebooks of judges and magistrates sitting in supreme, police, provincial and summary courts at Shanghai. Types of cases recorded in the notebooks include civil, criminal, divorce and intestate cases, inquests, bankruptcy and probate hearings, arbitrations and admiralty cases. Also included are notebooks of circuit judges sitting on the Shanghai circuit.

Physical condition: Some notebooks have suffered from insect infestation and damp due to the storage conditions.
Custodial history: The Shanghai court records were discovered by the Chinese authorities in c. 1981 in the old Consulate-General building where they had been deposited for safe keeping on the approval of the Chinese Red Army in c.1949.
