Description:

(i) Receipt by Thomas Inglis of 'Atherny', merchant, burgess of Edinburgh, for a debt of £1,000 Scots owed to him by George Airth, senior of Foxton, half of £2,000 owed to him and to his deceased brother Cornelius Inglis. Airth contracted to give to Inglis's deceased father James, and James' two sons, an extra £200 annually in wadset [conveyance of land in pledge for a debt, with a reserved power to the debtor to recover his lands on payment of the debt] from lands in and near Cupar, Fifeshire. Inglis acknowledges the receipt of this also, and agrees, in his own name and that of his nephew James, son of Cornelius, to have the acknowledgement registered in the books of council and in the commissary's books of St. Andrews; for that purpose he appoints [blank] as his procurators. The document was drawn up 'at the Belltoure besyde' the said borough of Cupar. Three witnesses [named] together with the writer, James Stenn [? owe], and Inglis's servant David Roberson. [Signed by] Inglis and witnesses William Blacadre, Patrick Glasfurd and Andrew his son. [?15] May 1608. (ii) [Endorsed, in different hands]: 1.
