Administrative / biographical background:

Sir Arthur Aston's initial diplomatic posting was in 1819 to the embassy in Vienna. From 5th April 1826 to 11th January 1833 he was Secretary to the British legation in Brazil and from then until February 1840 Secretary to the embassy in Paris. On 13th February 1840 he was appointed as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in Madrid. He retired from this post on 13th November 1843, shortly after being awarded his GCB. He died c. 1860.
