Administrative / biographical background: |
After Egypt united with Syria in 1958, Egypt and Syria were known as the United Arab Republic. Though Syria withdrew from the union in 1961, the name United Arab Republic continued in use for Egypt until September 1971. Diplomatic relations between Britain and the United Arab Republic were broken off in 1965 and resumed in 1968, during which time British interests were handled by the Canadian embassy in Cairo. |
