Administrative / biographical background: |
The Atomic Energy and Disarmament Department of the Foreign Office dealt with international issues concerning the military aspects of atomic energy, and the control and regulation of armaments. The department was abolished upon the formation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 1968. Responsibility for disarmament questions passed to a new Disarmament Department. An Arms Control and Disarmament Research Unit handled research into problems of arms control and disarmament, while questions relating to military uses of atomic energy passed to the Defence Policy Department. |
