Administrative / biographical background:

The Price Commission, established in 1973, was responsible for administering the Price Code under the Counter Inflation Act of that year, and for advising the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection on prices and charges. This work included the vetting of submissions for price increases, investigation of variations and alleged breaches of the code, and monitoring of retail food prices.

The abolition of the Price Commission was announced in 1979 and it was wound up in the following year under the Competition Act 1980.
