Description:

Ministry of Education and Department of Education and Science primary and secondary schools development plans submitted to the minister by Local Education Authorities in accordance with section II(1) of the 1944 Education Act.

The series shows the immediate post-war provision of education in England as well as plans for future expansion under the 1944 Act.

Four file series are included in this series. The main series, P/S LEA DP, begin with the submission of the plan and contain exhaustive discussion of the proposals for primary and secondary schools, ending with the minister's final approval.

P/S LEA DP(P) files consist of protests, from various sources, against the development plans, mainly over the closing or amalgamation of schools.

Special schools are dealt with in the M LEA DP series, which contain detailed consideration of proposals for the education of children in need of special educational treatment.

Papers have also been extracted from some P/S LEA G supply files for areas where they concern the preparation of their development plans.
