They include people of national importance, such as Matthew Arnold, who had been one of the earliest Inspectors of Schools, and Sir Trenchard Cox, director of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The two files relating to Inspectors of Schools (HMIs) show the way in which the department dealt with staff, while the file relating to the Chief Librarian contains information on the employment of women in professional posts in the department.
