Description:

Folio 344. [Frederick Christian von Plettenberg-Lenhausen,] bishop of Münster, to [John X Louis van Elderen,] bishop of Liège. Acknowledges receipt of a missive of Dec 30 informing him of an [early, i.e. pre-July 1693] attempt to attack the French at the town and castle of Huy [Meuse] resulting in the enemy's withdrawal; and of a copy of a letter of request [no date given] to the princely estates of the circles of Lower Rhine and Westphalia for financial assistance in the maintenance of his garrison. To the former, he replies with his congratulations, to the latter, by pointing out that Liège could not expect such help from any of the armed [like the princely] or unarmed, whose means are entirely exhausted by the burdens of war, moreover, no subsidies by the estates are possible without convocation and vote; he, Münster, has, however, interceded with the States General to take the requested assistance into their serious consideration, since the 'conservation' and integrity of the bishopric of Liège as a barrier is in their own interest; encloses copy of his 'votum' [not copied here] that the States General recommend [to their subjects] the grant of such aid by means of 'directorial' circular.
