Administrative / biographical background: |
The Training Department was formed in January 1919, when the section of the Civil Demobilisation and Resettlement Department dealing with training was made into a separate department. In May 1919 it took over responsibility for training disabled ex-servicemen from the Ministry of Pensions. When the Appointments and Civil Liabilities Department ended in 1925, the Civil Liabilities section merged with the Training Department. When the Civil Liabilities section ended in 1929, responsibility for training was transferred to the Employment and Insurance Department which then split to form the Employment and Training Department, LAB 7/74-91. The Training Department in 1919 was made responsible for industrial training of non-commissioned ex-servicemen, and men and women discharged from war occupations. It was also responsible for training disabled ex-servicemen (to be completed in 1923), looking after apprentices whose term had been interrupted by war service (to be completed in 1921), and training widows and dependants of officers and widows of ex-servicemen (to be completed in 1920). It administered government training factories and controlled divisional and local training committees. |
