Title: YUGOSLAVIA
Date: 1938-1961
Administrative / biographical background:

In Yugoslavia, the civil war between Mihailovic's nationalist Cetniks and Tito's Communist partisans, together with the exiled Yugoslav Government's disunity, caused severe military and political difficulties for the Special Operations Executive and its Missions to the two resistance movements. Mihailovic's repeated failures to cooperate with the Allies and his later cooperation with the occupying forces, eventually led to the withdrawal of SOE support for him in favour of Tito's forces alone. In supporting the latter, SOE's Maclean Mission made a significant contribution to the Allied war effort.
