The Ale Measures Act of 1698 was an attempt to enforce the use of standard-sized vessels for selling ale. Each mayor or chief officer of a city or town was responsible for certifying that drinking vessels were of a standard size - either a pint or a quart. To do this, they were supplied with standard pint or quart measures by the collectors of the excise who obtained them from the chamberlains of the Exchequer who held the original standard measures. |
