Title: | Palatinate of Durham: Clerk of the Crown: Indictments Files |
Description: |
This series consists mainly of Durham assize records; not only of indictments, but of other records related to the session filed by the clerk of the crown at the end of the assizes in question. Other records include recognisances, informations, depositions, records of assize proceedings, nomina ministrorum (lists of justices and other officials attending the assizes), jury lists, commissions of assize and gaol delivery for the judges, calendars of prisoners, and coroners' inquests. |
Date: | 1582-1877 |
Arrangement: |
The assize records are mainly kept in annual files. From 1713 onwards there are gaps only for 1738-1740 and 1742. Until 1771 each file contains at least four annual assize files; thereafter the arrangement is one files a year until 1819, when the addition of spring to summer assizes produces two pieces a year. Winter assizes being added in 1855, there are three files a year thenceforward. |
