Sir Edward Thornton the younger, G.C.B. (1817-1906), son of the above. [FO 933/93-117]. He held diplomatic posts in Mexico, 1845 to 1854, Montevideo, 1854 to 1859, and Buenos Aires, 1859-1863; was envoy at Rio de Janeiro, 1865 to 1867, and Washington, 1867 to 1881; and ambassador at St. Petersburg, 1881 to 1884. He was appointed ambassador to Constantinople in 1884, but that post was temporarily filled by Sir William White until Thornton's retirement in 1886. |
