Administrative / biographical background:

The research boards set up by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) were of an enduring nature, whereas the Committees tended to be wound up after a relatively short period, being created by the department as occasion arose to supervise investigations into particular problems. Their appointment was the result of either an initiative by DSIR in response to a recognised need, or to pioneer work of a DSIR research establishment which aroused the interest of industry, or of an application by a noted research worker for financial assistance in the furtherance of a particular line of research.
