Administrative / biographical background:

Organisations may apply to be approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to provide reports and make certifications in respect of design and construction of complete aircraft, engines and the manufacture of equipment. Other forms of approval are related to the manufacture of components and assemblies; the manufacture of materials; inspections, overhauls and repairs to aircraft, engines, components or items of equipment; and maintenance of aeroplanes exceeding 13,610 kg.

When the CAA is satisfied with the competence, facilities and procedures of an organisation, a certificate and schedule defining the scope of approval is issued.

In addition the CAA has to be satisfied that airline operators or, in some cases, contracted organisations, are competent to undertake maintenance of types of aircraft involved in accordance with the approved schedules. Such operators are then issued with an Air Operator's Certificate.
