Administrative / biographical background: |
The East Africa Department dealt with UK and Commonwealth political and economic relations with Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika and Zanzibar (later Tanzania) and Mauritius. In 1964 the Department was split and two new East Africa Political and Economic Departments were created, and the records in this series are those produced by the political department. The single East Africa Department was reconstituted in 1966. Between March 1967 and February 1968 the interests of Commonwealth East Africa were the responsibility of the East and Southern Africa Department. On the creation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in October 1968, responsibility for relations with East Africa passed to the FCO East African Department. |
