Administrative / biographical background:

The Federation of Nigeria achieved independence as a member of the Commonwealth on 1 October 1960, and became a republic in October 1963. British representation in Nigeria from October 1960 consisted of the High Commission in Lagos, and offices for four Deputy High Commissioners for each of the federal regions (Kaduna in Northern Nigeria; Enugu in Eastern Nigeria; Ibadan in Western Nigeria) and Lagos in the capital. No separate deputy high commission was established in Mid-Western Nigeria when that region was created in August 1963 out of provinces previously part of Western Nigeria. The regional structure was eventually replaced by division into 30 (later increased to 36) states, but British representation retained the same pattern, though the number and location of Deputy High Commissions varied over time.
