A British High Commission was established in Dar-Es-Salaam in December 1961 when Tanganyika became independent. Zanzibar attained independence in December 1963, when a separate High Commission was established on the island. The two states became a unified state, Tanzania, in April 1964, at which time the Zanzibar High Commission was abolished, and two deputy High Commissioners, based at Zanzibar and Dar-Es-Salaam, were established to work under the High Commissioner to Tanzania, based in Dar-Es-Salaam.
