Administrative / biographical background:

Between 1958 and 1962 there was no department of the Commonwealth Relations Office that dealt specifically with nationality matters. In 1962 the Nationality and General Department was set up as part of the West Indies and General (1962-1964) and later the Western, Constitutional and General (1964-1965) Divisions. In 1965 the department was dissolved and nationality responsibilities passed to the Nationality and Consular Department of the General Division (1965-1966). This continued in the Commonwealth Office until 1967, when a joint Foreign Office/ Commonwealth Office Nationality and Treaty Department was established.
