This series contains private office papers. These unregistered files cover a wide range of subjects including correspondence with British Government representatives overseas, records of meetings held by the Secretary of State, minutes to the Prime Minister, and papers about the appointment of British Government representatives in Commonwealth countries. The series includes a distinct collection of papers of Sir Eric Machtig, permanent under-secretary of state, 1940-1948.

There is an account of the Ottawa Conference 1932, and a file on the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Canada and the USA in 1939. Files dating from after the Second World War include a number relating to Central Africa and the formation of the Central African Federation, and some on Bechuanaland and the Khama family.

Arrangement:

Up to piece 224, the files are in groups, with general subjects first, followed by the Commonwealth countries in alphabetical order. Thereafter the files are arranged by the former private office file number.
