Files contain letters in and copies of letters despatched, the related minutes, reports and memoranda, and a number of plans. The correspondence is mainly between the deputy surveyor at Windsor and the commissioners of Crown lands in Whitehall, various contractors, or occasionally Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle regarding the royal family's instructions. Files also relate to the replanting or felling of trees, the renewal of pasturage, the repair or erection of bridges and buildings, the purchase and sale of livestock, access to the parks (including the closure of level crossings), the review of the Household Cavalry in the Great Park in 1913 and arrangements for military training there after the Great War, and maintenance and works at Ascot Racecourse, the Berkshire and Datchet golf courses, Rapley and Southlea farms etc. The minutes of the meetings of the Windsor Parks and Woods Advisory Committee and related correspondence for the period 1916-1926, and similar papers of the Windsor Parks Consultative Committee for the period 1935-1937 are also in this series. |
