Administrative / biographical background:

At nationalisation, the NCB acquired a wide range of ancillary activities from the former mine owners. These included brick-works, fuel distribution interests and other activities of the colliery companies, as well as land and property. Ancillaries connected with the carbonisation of coal and related products came under the Coal Products Division in 1963 and, in 1973, under NCB (Coal Products) Limited. At the same time, the other ancillaries of the NCB were brought under a holding company, NCB (Ancillaries) Ltd; both are responsible for raising their own capital for investment, although their borrowings count against the board's overall borrowing limits.

NCB (Ancillaries) Ltd was responsible to the NCB for the wholly-owned companies under its control, which include National Fuel Distribution Ltd, Southern Depot Co. Ltd, Tredomen Engineering Works Ltd, Compower Ltd and Coal Industry Estates Ltd, and for partly-owned subsidiary and associated companies. These provided services to the board's main operations or protected the market for solid fuel. Their work involved solid fuel distribution, engineering manufacturing, and managing and selling the board's surplus land. NCB (Ancillaries) Ltd is partially staffed by NCB headquarters personnel.

Tredomen Engineering Works, South Wales, was founded by Powell Duffryn Ltd in 1922, and was rested in the National Coal Board [NCB] at nationalisation in 1947. It was controlled by South Western Division of the NCB until 1966 when it became a headquarters activity. In 1973 it was incorporated as a subsidiary of the NCB (Ancillaries) Ltd. From 1985 control passed to the Technical Director until it was sold in 1988.
