Administrative / biographical background:

Purchasing, supply and contracts work was carried out by the Production Department until 1955. Following the implementation of the Fleck Report in that year the Purchasing and Stores Department was established, at headquarters, divisional, area and colliery levels. It had the NCB's regional purchasing and stores offices and central stores among its responsibilities. In 1988 the Purchasing and Stores Department and Area Workshops organisations were amalgamated to form the Supply and Contracts Department.
